For those of you, who don't plan to go anywhere near the Hague this year. Here are some snapshots of the exhibition on visual communication of which I was guest curator. Open until 20 march 2005 in the Communications Museum, the Hague.

The past year I've been guest curator of an exhibition in the Dutch Communications Museum. Our goal was to unveil the triviality of seeing. Among the exhibits are a globalisation burka, Spiderman, an upside down bathroom, the biggest collage in the world, a see-through butterfly guy, a stack of wood, a darkroom, the most expensive coat in the world made out of clothing labels and clothing labels only. It is all about looking and being looked at. Sounds like a mess? It's not. The expo will run for almost a year. I will probably post some pictures later. (update: pictures are here)

Is it an art exhibit? Is it a fancy fair? None of above! Kunstvlaai is an untidy art fair in Amsterdam. Contributions from Iceland to China.

We all know those little clickbuttons you use to close or scale windows on the computerdesktop. I've made some new different versions. They look alike, but when you use them the differ in their feel. Please try them and vote for the one you like the best. Thanks!

Pablo Picasso was once asked why he did not paint people 'the way they really are.' Pablo asked the questioner what he meant. The man pulled a snapshot of his wife out of his wallet and said, 'That's my wife.' Pablo responded, 'Isn't she rather small and flat?'

Nature! We all love it. But what is it? Real nature is untouched by humans, but paradoxally humans evolved out of nature themselves. Nowadays our environment is entirely determined by ourselves. The roof above your head, the chair you sit on, there is nothing natural to it. Look around you and try to find the most natural object in the room. It is you.
I wonder, what it means to be human in our next nature and initiated a project: Na ons de Mens. (alert: lots of letters.. and Dutch!)

First Five Rules of Interpassive Cinema:
1. An interpassive film can be viewed in two ways: leanback and leanforward.
2. When leaned forward, the viewer acts upon and influences the film. Viewers action is rewarded at any moment.
3. When leaned back, the interpassive film acts like a regular film: linear from the beginning to the end.
4. The viewer can fluently switch between the two modes at any time during the movie.
5. The viewer decides the mode, not the movie (explicit requests to change mode or infinite local loops, that force the viewer to leanforward, are forbidden).

This thursday at the International Film Festival Rotterdam, we present the results of a workshop on interactive documentary making. Five teams of designers and filmmakers have been sweating for some months, developping their interactive documentary concepts. Expect beautiful results, me babbling, and cake afterwards.

Lev Kuleshov was an early Russian filmmaker who believed that juxtaposing two unrelated images could convey a separate meaning. In his experiment he filmed Mozhukhin, a famous Russian actor, and shots of a bowl of soup, a girl, a teddy bear, and a child's coffin. He then cut the shot of the actor into the other shot; each time it was the same shot of the actor. Context is content. Viewers felt that the shots of the actor conveyed different emotions, though each time it was in fact the same shot.

4holes for 4balls is a tiny game I've created to keep you occupied. The rules are easy: there are four balls and four holes and you want to put the balls in the holes and then you start hating gravity. Enjoy.
