First Five Rules of Interpassive Cinema

First Five Rules of Interpassive Cinema:

1. An interpassive film can be viewed in two ways: leanback and leanforward.

2. When leaned forward, the viewer acts upon and influences the film. Viewers action is rewarded at any moment.

3. When leaned back, the interpassive film acts like a regular film: linear from the beginning to the end.

4. The viewer can fluently switch between the two modes at any time during the movie.

5. The viewer decides the mode, not the movie (explicit requests to change mode or infinite local loops, that force the viewer to leanforward, are forbidden).

Ofcourse Drift http://www.koert.com/work/drift/play.php) is my first example of an interpassive film. If you know of other examples, let me know!

This one looks a bit like an interpassive film.
(Only clouds drift by, but something happens anyway)

A beautiful piece of work Arnoud! Indeed the infinite looping is a sin against rule #5: It pushes the viewer into action. But it will only take a small adjustment to change this piece into an official interpassive movie. :-)

I can’t think of any interpassive films I guess it is a new genre you invented.

Hey if I have a movie on video. I can lean back in the sofa and leanforward to press the fastforward button on the remote then that would be an interpassive movie right!!?????????????
Yumi - 12 02 04 - 13:58

Yumi, you are right! Regular movie on video with a FF-button is interpassive film.

And Gaetan, let me explain. I was frustrated with interactive movies that need your attention all the time (‘INTERACT NOW’ calls are often so stupid, they withheld viewers from looking). Still I didn’t want to go back to classic linear movie because interaction can be nice sometimes. So I went for a syntheses and invented this interpassive genre.

But indeed you are right when you say the added value isn’t high. I agree it is a lot of work to make an interpassive movie. It sure was a lot of work to make ‘Drift’ and I don’t expect it to become a new genre or anything. It’s just an experiment. Maybe it will become easier by the time actors are rendered realtime from meta-data?
